Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc and reigning Formula One World Champion Max Verstappen have had one too a many races this season where they’ve had to go head-to-head with each other, from passing to re-passing each other on the tracks. However, it is to note that it definitely doesn’t bear any resemblance to the rivalry shared between Verstappen and 7-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton last season.

On the other hand, Leclerc and Verstappen’s rivalry dates back to their go-karting days almost 10 years ago. The Monacan driver has been vocal about how they were extremely aggressive with each other on the track back then which resulted into bitter feelings.

“When we were younger, it was a bit more messy and obviously we were kids. But now the relationship has improved, and there’s a lot of respect,” said Leclerc. The pair has previously had severe fights in F1. After Verstappen pushed Leclerc off the track to claim victory in Austria in 2019, Leclerc retaliated at the following race in Silverstone, where they showcased an incredible wheel-to-wheel battle in the opening stint.

And Leclerc does not exclude the possibility of their fight becoming more heated in the long run. “It depends on the situation, on the person you’re facing, your opponent. How far is he willing to go? This year, either I had a big advantage in the championship and then you are not really willing to take those risks. Or he had a big advantage in the championship and he is not really willing to risk. Or I am not really willing to risk because I need to catch up points,” added the Monacan.

Leclerc concluded: “So, I feel like the championship of last year was probably much more prone to see these type of things because it was so close until the very end. I would have expected us to be much more like this if the championship will be extremely close towards the end. [If] it’s not finished, then we might see that at the end of the year.”
