Lewis Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes has been a hot topic since the start of the 2023 Formula 1 season. His current contract expires at the end of the year. The seven-time world champion has not signed a new contract yet. This led to speculations that the Mercedes driver might leave the team and look for a seat elsewhere, especially in Ferrari. However, Former F1 driver Johnny Herbert does not think Hamilton would drive for Ferrari. Especially at this time of his career.

Hamilton has the most successful records in Formula 1. He has the most pole positions, and the most race wins. Mercedes AMG Petronas has always been an integral part of his career. Like other top drivers over the years, Hamilton was linked with a move to Ferrari. But Johnny Herbert does not think it is likely to happen. He questioned if Ferrari was the right place to go.

Johnny Herbert told GIVEMESPORT, “We know there’s always been promise, but the promise never quite materialises into the actual final concept that does work. Last year they came out of the blocks flying, and then it all seemed to just evaporate and disappear due to various things. That’s what generally makes Mercedes probably more of a good prospect for wins.” Herbert feels Mercedes is a better option for Hamilton than Ferrari, especially because of Ferrari’s strategy and reliability issues.

Herbert further added, “As a driver, there’s always the talk about Ferrari being the team that you’ve got to really experience, but I don’t think Lewis is that way. He just wants to be able to win races and be the fastest, and he’s got all that from Mercedes for a very good period of his career.” The three times Grand Prix winner believes that Hamilton just wants to win races.

Despite all the rumors, Toto Wolff stated that Hamilton is committed to the team. Though Wolff mentioned that his Mercedes star driver would need to leave the team and look elsewhere if they don’t fix their car soon, he is convinced that Hamilton will sign a new deal with Mercedes. The 2023 season is underway, and there is plenty of time left. However, Hamilton’s fans are getting restless.

Lewis Hamilton is not the one to leave in times of adversity. Time and again, the world champion had expressed that he wanted to continue with Mercedes. Despite the poor start to the 2023 season, Hamilton mentioned he had 100 percent belief in his team and considers them his family. He stated, “I don’t plan on going anywhere else.” He could not be clearer than this.
