“They didn’t listen to their driver” : F1 journalists bore witness to Ferrari disappointing Charles Leclerc in the Hungarian GP
Charles Leclerc
Defending Formula One World Champion and Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen won the Hungarian Grand Prix after starting from P10. The Dutch driver navigated his way to the front in commanding fashion, while Ferrari once again fell short tactically.
Jesus Balseiro, a Formula 1 journalist, is one of the patrons on F1’s official podcast, where the gentlemen debate whether Verstappen won or Ferrari lost the race. The Spanish journalist from Diario AS thinks that both the cases are plausible.
F1 journalists discuss how Ferrari has yet again disappointed Charles Leclerc
“At some point Max is winning because of the great pace he had. Maybe Lewis Hamilton[today] was also really fast. Some other drivers came from behind, but Max had to overtake Charles twice and that is obviously a good thing for Formula One,” said Balseiro. Balseiro believes Ferrari would have lost the race regardless, but is unsure whether it would have been due to strategic approach or a dearth of power efficiency; thus, notwithstanding their great starting place, Ferrari disappoints him. “If you start second or third you should at least be on the podium,” said the F1 journalist.
Frédéric Ferret, a reporter for the French newspaper L’Equipe, is also a keynote speaker. At the Hungary Grand Prix, he witnessed an unimpressive Leclerc. He led the race and had previously encountered his mistake at the French Grand Prix and numerous mechanical issues, but this time, according to the reporter, it was a pit wall error.
“They didn’t listen to their driver,” said Ferret. He uses Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner as an illustration, saying that he gained from Verstappen that the hard tyre wasn’t any good from the beginning of the race. “Charles didn’t want to go to the hard tyre but wanted to continue for a long time on the medium, but still they bring him in and therefore bring Charles to hell,” concluded the French reporter.
