“They need to find a solution quickly”: Ralf Schumacher comments on Ferrari’s recent reliability issues with their power unit

Ralf Schumacher feels that Ferrari need to up their game following a strategic error at the Monaco GP

As the oldest and most successful team in Formula 1, all the motorsport fans have a different level of expectation from Ferrari that the Maranello outfit has not been able to live up to, recently. At the very beginning of this season, Ferrari came out as the leading team with a near-perfect car–the F1-75–that every F1 pundits said the other teams had to watch out for. But with time, Ferrari has gone down the rank and the Italian team has been replaced by Red Bull Racing in the points table.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who had earlier been touted as a World Championship favorite for this year, has suffered some terrible race results even after consistently qualifying in the pole position for six out of the eight races that have happened till now. In last week’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc and his team had took to the Baku Street Circuit vowing to retain their pole position and convert it into a Grand Prix victory. But unfortunately, that did not go as planned. And now, F1 veteran Ralf Schumacher is commenting on how Ferrari needs to come up with a quick fix for these problems before the Championship contention goes out of its hands.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was clearly a weekend to forget for the Scuderia as both their racers, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, were out of the race in the first half of the GP itself, due to mechanical problems with their cars. On top of that, Guanyu Zhou, who drives a Ferrari-powered Alfa Romeo C42, and Magnussen, who uses a Ferrari power unit as well, retired from the race citing issues with their power units.

According to Ralf Schumacher, it cannot be a coincidence that four racers, all driving Ferrari-powered cars, had to retire from the same Grand Prix on the same day. This speaks for the sheer flaw in the Ferrari unit that needs closer inspection, and more importantly, a swift solution. Speaking on this topic, Schumacher said, “Ferrari has been badly affected, the situation is dramatic and Mattia Binotto is struggling.”

He further added, “After the strong start, it was the declining consistency of the drivers, followed by technical problems. They need to find a solution quickly, but I don’t think the Scuderia will be able to get their problems under control before the Canadian Grand Prix.
