“This is an unacceptable situation,” Martin Brundle criticises the FIA for their incompetence during the Italian GP

The Italian Grand Prix weekend was made spicier from the start with reports of Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz taking grid penalties with the the Spaniard and the Brit starting from the back of the grid. This basically meant that it was Charles Leclerc’s weekend to perform as most of his worries had been diminishing.
Although it did not seem to be the case, Martin Brundle expressed his frustration at the FIA for what happened after the qualifying at Monza came to an end.
Charles Leclerc aced qualifying and achieved pole position for the 2022 Italian Grand Prix. With reigning world champion Max Verstappen getting P2, a five place grid penalty meant that he wouldn’t start from the front row of the grid. A total of 7 drivers were to take a grid penalty for the race after changing parts which in turn created a lot of confusion and left the FIA in ruckus. Martin Brundle was not happy with the way that the organisation handled this situation and expressed his frustration over the current grid penalty system in the sport which at times doesn’t make sense.
Normally the FIA releases the starting grid documents an hour after qualifying but that was not the case last weekend as fans had to wait hours and hours for a confirmation of the starting grid for Sunday’s race. No one had any idea about the actual grid which included the teams and the drivers.
The final starting grid was very different from the qualifying results which was expected in the end but it brought light into the grid penalty system which just didn’t seem to gel right. Martin Brundle shared his concerns over it.
“We waited for several hours for the tortuous and complex process,” Martin Brundle on FIA’s incompetence
He furthered raised his concerns. “This is an unacceptable situation because when the fans turn up trackside or switch on their TV sets to watch qualifying, they should reasonably expect that they’re watching the race grid being formed. Instead we waited for several hours for the tortuous and complex process of how penalties were applied”, he said.
The fans have a right to know and the rule makers of the sport also need to take a deep look into their book and make some changes for the better so that there’s less confusion and better racing.
Leaving the fans in such a debacle was not fair and shouldn’t happen again. There could be another possibility of drivers taking a grid penalty in one of the upcoming races so the FIA need to be ready and more careful this time.
