Mick Schumacher made his F1 debut in 2021 with the Haas F1 Team. The German driver stayed at the American team for two seasons before being sacked in favor of Nico Hulkenberg. Subsequently, he decided to spend a year on the sidelines as the Mercedes reserve driver. However, it seems that Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff is trying to get a seat for Schumacher through an old friend.
Wolff aims to convince Williams Team boss James Vowles to sign Mick instead of Logan Sargeant. Sargeant failed to deliver decent results in his debut season for the Grove-based team so far. Critics have argued that the American driver was only hired for his commercial appeal. However, it was dismissed by Vowles. According to Sport1, Toto is in discussions with the former Mercedes chief of strategy to replace Logan with Mick on the team.
Wolff and Vowles are considered to have a close bond that was formed at the Silver Arrows over the years. As such, it is no surprise that the Mercedes team boss is trying to get Mick Schumacher placed in James Vowles‘ team. It must be noted that Schumacher was on the Williams list for 2023. Although, the Grove-based team decided against signing the German driver.

Mick Schumacher is not a pick for AlphaTauri
AlphaTauri are looking into its options to replace Nyck de Vries. The Dutchman failed to impress the Faenza-based team after a string of underwhelming results. This could have potentially opened up a place for Mick Schumacher on the team.
However, Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko has dismissed the possibility of the German driver racing for the Red Bull’s sister team. Marko cited Mick’s connections with arch-rival Mercedes for this decision.
The 24-year-old has impressed the Silver Arrows through his reserve role so far. Subsequently, Wolff is keen to have the German driver back on the grid with a full-time seat. Although, Mick Schumacher will have to look for a seat outside Brackley as the current Mercedes line-up of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell is expected to stay intact for next season.
Thus, Toto Wolff is trying to find a seat for Mick Schumacher in F1. Williams is potentially the best option for the German driver. The Grove-based team has been using Mercedes Powerunits since 2014, and also the new team principal James Vowles is Wolff’s old ally. It remains to be seen if the Mercedes team boss can convince Vowles to make this switch.
