Toto Wolff, the Mercedes Team Principal, has shared his opinion on George Russell ending his qualifying outing in a disappointing P18. Russell had the car under him to fight for the pole, as proved by Lewis Hamilton, but during his final Q1 run, he was caught by traffic, which ruined his chances of advancing into the further rounds.
George Russell was furious with his qualifying outing and was seen venting his frustration on the team radio, but he was not the only one who was extremely disappointed. Toto Wolff was also pretty distraught and was even seen banging his hand in the Mercedes garage. The Hungarian GP qualifying session was both bitter and sweet for the team.
After the qualifying session, Wolff was asked to dwell on the young Brit’s outing, and while talking about the same, he told racingnews365.com, “Q1 was messy, not only for us but for many others. Just so many cars on a single piece of track. We put him in the wrong position. The first run was already compromised, and then everybody was bunching up in the last corner was far from ideal.“
“We know there is no code between the drivers anymore because he was overtaken by three between Turn 13 and Turn 14, and that completely screws your last lap. But we need to take it on us that we haven’t put him in a better position.” Looking at the Austrian comments, it seems he and his crew were to blame for Russell’s Q3 exit.
Lewis Hamilton is in the pole position for Toto Wolff’s team
While George Russell will be seen at the south end of the grid at the start of the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, will start his exploits from P1 for the Toto Wolff-led team. It is after a long time that the former 7-time World Champion will start a race from the pole position.
However, getting the pole for the race is a job half done as the Hungarian Grand Prix is yet to begin. Red Bull has won all the ten events that have taken place so far, and Verstappen has been in scintillating form behind the wheel of the RB19. He would do everything he could to get the jump on Hamilton going into Turn 1.
Taking into account everything that has been discussed above, the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix is shaping up to be a must-see event for fans all over the globe. The stands at the Hungaroring would be operating at full capacity during the upcoming race, and several eyes would be on Lewis Hamilton’s exploits.
