Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes have struggled in F1’s ground-effect era since 2022. The Briton is set to leave the Silver Arrows for Ferrari next year due to this poor run. Recently some questions arouse over the British racer’s commitment to the team. Now, Toto Wolff has reassured that Hamilton continues to prioritize the Barclay base squad despite the planned Ferrari move on the horizon.
Lewis Hamilton signed a massive $430 million deal with Maranello. Critics have claimed that the reason for this move was Mercedes’ degrading form in recent years. However, Team principal Toto Wolff suggested that the drivers were ‘super’ in the setup of the Mercedes’ challenger. Additionally, Wolff mentioned that Hamilton was as good as he could be amidst the current struggles.
I think the drivers are super in this whole setup because Lewis is as good as you can be.
Toto Wolff said, as reported by motorsport.com.
Apart from this, Wolff compared Mercedes’ current condition to Ferrari’s much more positive performance. The 52-year-old agreed how it was ‘frustrating’ for Hamilton to see his current team in such a state. The Austrian billionaire pointed out things were much better ‘over the fence’ at the Ferrari camp. However, Toto Wolff reaffirmed that Hamilton’s main priority lied with the Silver Arrows in 2024.
He's in a situation obviously where, on one side, it's super frustrating to see that we are not getting it. On the other side, look over the fence. It's pretty good what's happening there. But that is not his main priority today.Toto Wolff mentioned.
Toto Wolff claims George Russell is a ‘fighter’ amidst Mercedes struggles
George Russell has embraced the issues faced by Mercedes this season. The 26-year-old has performed comparatively better than Lewis Hamilton. Russell has a ten-point lead over Lewis Hamilton after the first three races. Toto Wolff reckoned that the 26-year-old was a ‘fighter’ who was ready to stick with the team despite the performance slump.
George is just a fighter and he's sticking in.Toto Wolff announced.
Apart from this, Wolff highlighted that George Russell was aware of his place within the team before Hamilton’s departure. The Team Principal had previously asserted that Russell would be the lead driver after Lewis Hamilton leaves for Maranello. Hence, Toto Wolff agreed that Brackely needed to sort out the issues as soon as possible to give a good car to Russell and Hamilton..
He [George Russell] knows that's his place. So, we've got to sort this out."Toto Wolff declared.
Mercedes would need to desperately work on its car to return back to winning ways. The Silver Arrows have failed to fight for race wins against Red Bull and Ferrari. However, Brackley would hope that its in-season upgrades could help turn the tide over the course of this year.
