Toto Wolff contends that Ferrari is “between rock and hard place” regarding giving out team orders

Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz’s chances of winning Saturday’s sprint race were hindered by a fierce battle for second place in the opening laps, which gave reigning Formula One World Champion Max Verstappen more room to take the lead. Leclerc was free to run in open space as he pursued the leader after a close contest at Turn 4 caused Sainz to relinquish distance.

Leclerc stated after the race that if the Maranello-based racing team wants to defeat the Red Bull driver on Sunday, it cannot risk to replicate the duel. Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto would have received “even more shit for team orders,” the Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff remarked, adding that he thought it was “really quite a decent choice” to allow the pair to compete.

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto remarked that the fastest car on track is the one that is prioritised but that he was happy to see those two drivers fighting. He also stressed on the importance of maximizing team points. He believes that by doing that Scuderia would maximize the drivers’ opportunities by taking off points from the opponents.

“So that’s the way we see it, the fastest car on track is the one that is prioritised. We believe by doing so, certainly at the moment at this time of the championship, there are things we can do,” said Binotto.

“If later in the championship there will be one of the two drivers who got most of the opportunities, certainly we will try to gain full priority, but it’s not the situation right now. So we need to cope with it,” concluded the Swiss-born team boss.
