Toto Wolff, the Mercedes Team Principal, has come forward and shown his support for the FIA and its stewards’ decision to reprimand Guenther Steiner for speaking up concerning a recent penalty given to his driver, Nico Hulkenberg. Wolff feels it is important to back the governing bodies as they try their best.
Guenther Steiner was not pleased in Monaco, where his Haas driver, Nico Hulkenberg, was given a penalty. Steiner was upset and came out with a firey outburst targeted at the FIA. For his comments, the Italian was given a reprimand as he was found in breach of the FIA’s International Sporting Code.
During that time, Steiner said, “We need a different system for stewards. Every professional sport has professionals being referees and stuff like this. F1 is one of the biggest sports in the world, and we still have laymen deciding on the fate of people which invest millions into their careers. And it’s always a discussion because there’s no consistency.“
While in the heat of the moment, Guenther Steiner said some things he shouldn’t have said, he later realized his mistake and apologized to the officials. Wolff feels that Steiner should not have acted out in the first place and ardently believes that it is important to back the officials responsible for the smooth organization of the events.
Toto Wolff’s take on the heated tussle between the FIA and Guenther Steiner

Toto Wolff has previously had his fair share of heated arguments with the FIA, and no one can forget his infamous 2021 outburst. Keeping that and Steiner’s recent argument into view, he said, “As a steward and a race director, you are under immense pressure to do the right things and probably every decision is going to have someone that likes it and the other one doesn’t.“
“So I think they’re just trying the best they can, and we need to support the FIA where we can.” The Austrian has shown his support for the tough job that the FIA does every weekend. He believes that there will always be some parties who would be happy with a certain design and some who won’t.
The FIA officials have now and then come under the firing line for their various decisions but considering the support that Toto Wolff has shown for them, what do you think about the working methods of the FIA? Do you think there is room for improvement in how they handle things during Grand Prix weekends?
