Mercedes, fresh off of their stunning performance at the US GP and the Mexican GP, wherein the team managed to bag a couple of P2 finishes for Lewis Hamilton, were expected to be the primary challengers to the dominating Red Bulls at Interlagos. However, the Silver Arrows failed to even compete for the podium places at the Brazilian Grand Prix. George Russell had to retire from the race in the closing laps, thus incurring a DNF. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton, Brazil’s favorite driver from the grid, only managed a P8 finish.
Toto Wolff, the man at the helm of the Silver Arrows, commented on the team’s lackluster performance at the Grand Prix. Wolff claimed that the team, themselves didn’t have too many chips to play around with as the car itself was the main reason behind their lack of pace. His comments were reported by racefans.net.
I think the race [management] and the messages for us today are completely irrelevant, There was nothing to manage or nothing to say, it’s a complete sideshow. I think the fundamental issue is that the car was slow.
During the Grand Prix, Russell was observed taking to the radio multiple times to discuss race management with the team. Russell, during several such radio calls, insisted that the team must demand Lewis Hamilton to slow down a little to allow Russell into his DRS range. Furthermore, Wolff’s disappointment stems from the fact that the team’s performance drastically decreased. The entire Mercedes garage will be aiming for more ‘consistency’ as the end of the season approaches, opening doors for the 2024 season.
Toto Wolff to join hands with Ineos CEO Sir Jim Ratcliffe to buy a stake at Manchester United
Toto Wolff, currently the Boss at Mercedes, had invested in several internet and technology companies before moving into motorsport. His journey in Motorsport began with HWA, a German company with links at Mercedes. Wolff recently disclosed his discussions with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the CEO of INEOS, about a joint bid for a stake in the iconic Premier League team, Manchester United.
Ratcliffe, the Principal Partner of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, proposed acquiring 25% ownership from the Glazer family, the current owners of Manchester United, as per BBC. Wolff expressed admiration for Ratcliffe’s approach, emphasizing their mutual trust and shared values, and later explained Ratcliffe’s adoration for the famous football club.
It would be interesting to see how this proposition develops. The Austrian team boss has already established a solid ground at the very peak of Motorsport and it will be fascinating to see how far his talents take him into the world of Football.
