Toto Wolff and Lewis Hamilton have been at it regarding the details of the latter’s new Formula 1 deal. Wolff previously said that a deal could be announced within days, but since then, nothing definitive has happened. At the end of the recently concluded Austrian GP, the Mercedes boss admitted that the ongoing discussions are no longer based on duration or money.

The Mercedes Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton and George Russell had an extremely torrid day behind the wheel of W14 at the Red Bull Ring. Moreover, the former was literarily fuming over the team radio; he was so frustrated with his outing that he did not even bother to attend the after-race drivers’ briefing.

Amidst all the problems that Mercedes faced in Austria, Toto Wolff was asked to give an update on the 38-year-old contract, and while talking about the same, he told Sky Sports, “I’m still very confident. They want to do it super, to every detail and sometimes you can have a situation where everything is carved out.”

This is not a money discussion at all. It is about the future; what is it that we want to do right and optimize? We’re not talking anything anymore about duration, money, all of that, it’s other topics.” The 51-year-old has made it crystal clear that the ongoing discussions with Hamilton’s entourage are based on what Mercedes actually want to do in upcoming years.

While Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff are still fine-tuning the former’s contract details, he desperately wants to win the F1 World Championship at least one more time to become the out-and-out World Championships record holder. He is tied with former F1 driver Michael Schumacher in 7 World Championships.

The Brit has achieved unprecedented success at the pinnacle of motor racing, but despite this, he wants to have a serious go at the World Championship again. The new regulations haven’t been kind to Mercedes, and considering this fact, Hamilton wants to understand everything happening on the team regarding the future before putting pen to paper.

Mercedes do not have a car worthy of challenging the mighty Red Bull team this year, but there is a growing belief that the Brackley-based team could produce a competitive car in 2024.
