“Toto Wolff is blocked on my phone,” Christian Horner elaborates on his hate-hate relationship with the Mercedes Boss
Toto Wolff and Christian Horner have never been the best of friends, rather they are the most ruthless competitors of each other in Formula 1.
Formula 1 is a fiercely competitive field where the racers always aim for each other’s necks while driving to be the very best on the grid. But when it comes to one of the biggest rivalries among the people currently involved in F1, it is not the racers who come to mind but the Team Principals of two of the biggest teams in the sport–Christian Horner from Red Bull and Toto Wolff from Mercedes. The two have never seen eye to eye on matters, and their rivalry peaked in the 2021 Championship season when RBR driver Max Verstappen went up against Lewis Hamilton’s consecutive race win record.
The competition between Horner and Wolff have gone down a few notches ever since Mercedes had a fall from grace, and could not be as competitive as they were in the previous seasons. Still, the two team leaders hardly ever waste an opportunity to make some caustic remarks against each other at public appearances when the journalists ask questions addressing their rivalry. At a recent podcast interview, Christian Horner made another reference to Wolff, claiming that the Austrian might have blocked him on the phone altogether.
When Christian Horner was asked to talk about his existing relationship with longtime rival Toto Wolff now that Mercedes look to be rising from the ashes with their double podium at the Spanish GP, the Briton joked that there was no communication at all. He said, “I think he’s blocked [on my phone]. It’s fine. I mean, look, there’s healthy competition, and it’s good to have rivalry in sport.“
Christian Horner has not held back from criticizing Mercedes after Red Bull resurgence
For a long time, Toto Wolff’s Mercedes have held the throne at the top of Formula One, building their record of eight back-to-back F1 World Championship wins by a constructor. But now, Red Bull have successfully managed to break that streak with their first season victory in 2022. And Christian Horner has rubbed it in whenever he got the chance at any of the interviews by mentioning Toto Wolff and the poor condition of the Mercedes team now as compared to Red Bull.
Regardless of Christian Horner’s taunts targeted at Toto Wolff, the Mercedes crew is hard at work to prevent their current season becoming a recapitulation of last year. In 2022, the team could not get Lewis Hamilton a single Grand Prix win and they themselves have only one race victory thanks to George Russell. This year, the W14 still does not look to be at par with the RB-19 of Red Bull, but the improvement it has shown in Spain leaves some hope for the fans to cling on to.
