Mick Schumacher was announced as the reserve driver for the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 team in 2023. The 23-year-old spent two years with Haas before joining Mercedes. His time with Haas was most of the time unpleasant. Guenther Steiner, the Haas boss, was not happy with Mick Schumacher. There were questions about his performance. Haas replaced Mick Schumacher with Nico Hulkenberg for the 2023 season. However, Toto Wolff hired the young German once he was available. 

The Mercedes team principal believes Guenther Steiner would have treated Mick Schumacher differently had Micheal Schumacher been by his son’s side. The seven-time world champion met with a ski accident nine years ago. The Formula 1 legend suffered severe injuries after his skiing incident in the French Alps. Since then, he has not been seen in public. Mick Schumacher was only 14 years old back then.

Wolff insisted, “We’re trying to get an old car ready for him as soon as possible.” The Austrian businessman and Mercedes team principal also spoke about Mick’s unfair treatment at Haas. “All I can say is that his parents did nothing wrong in bringing him up. And I agree that if Michael had been with his son during those two years at Haas, Gunther Steiner would not have dared to deal with Mick the way he did.”

Micheal Schumacher’s presence on the F1 grid would have had a positive impact on his son’s career. He would have given guidance and nudged him in the right direction. Wolff called out Steiner for treating Mick the way he did last season. There was unseen footage from the Netflix show, Formula 1: Drive to Survive, which revealed Steiner’s frustration with Mick Schumacher.

Toto Wolff told the Swiss newspaper Blick, “If one of our drivers gets covid or gets hurt, Mick will be in the car. Period, end of the discussion.” Mick Schumacher has been spotted in the Mercedes garage this season. He was seen with Toto Wolff in the first three races. Wolff wants to give the young German an opportunity as soon as possible. Toto Wolff is trying to sort out an old car to give Mick a chance to drive this season.

Mick Schumacher scored the first points in his Formula 1 career at the 2022 British Grand Prix. The Mercedes reserve driver also put up a good fight with the two-time world champion Max Verstappen and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton last season. Wolff is known for spotting talents. There must be a reason why he believes in Mick Schumacher.
