Toto Wolff reveals his openness to drastic changes in F1 following Christian Horner’s extreme revolt against it
Toto Wolff has recently shown his firm support for the changes that are taking place in F1.
Toto Wolff and Christian Horner
Toto Wolff, the Mercedes Team Principal, has, ahead of the Azerbaijan GP, talked about the changes that are coming into the pinnacle of motor racing. While the lights of Max Verstappen and Christian Horner are not very much in favor of it, Wolff ardently believes, that F1 is moving in the right direction with the changes that are taking place in the sport.
While shedding light on the same, Toto Wolff added, “I think we all have the same goal. We want to continue to develop the sport well and increase its audience.” Moreover, while talking about the Sprint races that have taken place since 2021, he said, “And some of the sprint races were fantastic. Whatever Stefano thinks is good, he will have the numbers on the table, which is good for the spectators and what is good for the Formula 1 brand.”
Unlike the Red Bull duo of Verstappen and Horner, Toto Wolff is all in favor of bringing on the changes that Stefano Domenicali and Co. have been thinking about. He has also admitted that the Sprint race format, in his opinion, has increased the excitement level, and some of the Sprint races that have taken place so far, have been nothing short of sensational.
The Mercedes Team Principal thinks that with the change in times, the sport has got to evolve as well. Thus, he feels that whatever changes that the hierarchy of the sport has been conjuring up in their offices are all going to be for the long-term benefit of F1. He sees the changes as a win-win situation for the teams and the global fanbase of the sport. However, one other reason for the open support for Sprint races could be that Wolff thinks that Mercedes can progress better with that format in 2023.
Toto Wolff wants F1 to keep hold of some of the old traditions of the sport
While Toto Wolff has wholeheartedly shown his support for changes in F1, he has also admitted that in the process of bringing on changes, the sport should not let some of the old traditions of the sport go out of the door as well. The Austrian, while stressing about the same, added, “We shouldn’t work on the matter with a baseball bat, but rather with a carpet knife, because you can simply work more precisely with it.”
Moreover, ahead of the Azerbaijan GP, Wolff was asked whether a second qualifying session for the Sprint could be added for the upcoming race. While answering, he said, “I don’t think two qualifying sessions are bad per se. But: If we stick to the current format, then we won’t get the drive mileage and Pirelli won’t have enough tires either. So we have to find a solution here.”
Looking at Toto Wolff’s comments, it seems that, in his opinion, staging two qualifying sessions is not feasible this year, but he feels this is something that could be looked upon or the future years of the sport.
