Toto Wolff, the Mercedes Team Principal, has talked about why he had to get on the team radio during the Austrian GP. Wolff has indicated that the Mercedes W14 was not performing as per expectations at the track, and he had to get involved with Lewis Hamilton and Co. to keep them calm.

As the Austrian GP got going, Lewis Hamilton was continuously talking with his team about the problems he was facing. He was struggling to keep his car inside the white line and Turn ten and was indicating that it was getting worse with every lap. The 38-year-old was also frustrated with not being able to challenge the Ferraris.

But only for the best interests of the drivers and the team, and sometimes you have moments where you need to calm things down.” The 51-year-old has made it known that he got on the team radio to ensure his drivers were fully focused on the task at hand. Toto Wolff feels the Austrian GP proved as an extremely tough day at the office for Mercedes

Before the Austrian GP, Mercedes was on a good run of form, with its drivers scoring excellent points regularly. However, the race at the Red Bull Ring showcased the problems of the W14. Lewis Hamilton was so frustrated with his outing that he didn’t attend the post-race drivers briefing.

Toto Wolff understands how tough the race was for Mercedes and added, “It was a bruising day. We couldn’t make the car quick. We saw it from Friday onwards that we were lacking a couple of tenths or a bit more. I think the swings are quite interesting. One weekend it’s us who are the first challenger [to Red Bull], and then it’s Ferrari, and then it’s Aston Martin, and this time we were on the back end of the group.

While Wolff’s team had a day to forget at the office, the only good thing coming out of Austria for Mercedes is that they are still second in the Constructors Championship. Next up is the British GP which has traditionally proved very fruitful for Mercedes, and considering this fact, several eyes would be on its prolific driver duo at Silverstone.
