Toto Wolff the Mercedes team Principal has recently talked about the race for the Championship between the top two contenders and has given his thoughts on the reliability issues that Ferrari has faced so far in the 2022 season.

Toto Wolff is someone who knows a thing or two about winning a Championship as since 2014 Mercedes won it every year till 2021.

While talking about the problems at Ferrari Wolff has said, “You always need to be on your toes with reliability because you need to score the points and not only be fast, I mean, I feel for the Ferrari guys because they have a super-powerful engine and a good car, but in the end, losing so many points makes you lose the championship.”

Mercedes does not have a strong car this year but still in the 8 completed races the team has managed to score 4 podiums. Whereas Ferrari which probably has the fastest car this year has not been able to make the most of its package because of their reliability issues.

Toto has suggested that for Ferrari it is crucial to finish races because otherwise, the gap to Red Bull can further increase in the upcoming races.

“It is important to consolidate and make sure that you are no worse than third. If they drop the ball often then we are there.”

Toto Wolff’s Mercedes is only 38 points behind Ferrari

Mercedes had a strong outing in Azerbaijan where they as a team was able to secure a 3rd and 4th place finish with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.

The silver arrows are pretty much out of both the Championship this season but however one important thing that is worth noting after Azerbaijan is that they are only 38 points behind the Maranello-based Ferrari outfit.

If Ferrari’s reliability issues continue in Canada, then there are very good chances that by the end of the race Mercedes could find themselves on the heels of Ferrari.

The Italian team has to pull its socks up ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix because otherwise, they could slip to third in the Constructors Championship and it is certainly not what they want.
