Toto Wolff throws shade at Max Verstappen, claims he only ‘destroys his teammates because car is built around his preference’
Toto Wolff believes the second driver always suffers in Red Bull because the team always caters to Max's needs
Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff believes that the Red Bull engineers build the car around Max Verstappen’s preferences, maybe that’s why Verstappen always performs better than the other driver. Since Max joined Red Bull, it has been seen that he is clearly the much-favoured driver out of the two, and that could be one of the factors that affects the performance of the other driver.
It’s the Dutch GP at Zandvoort and the results of the qualifying once again show a big gap between the two drivers of Red Bull. While Max Verstappen qualified for his eighth pole in a row, his teammate Sergio Perez qualified seventh.
Red Bull is in its dominant era. It is a fact well noted that they have the fastest car on the grid. But while one driver is qualifying consistently on top, the other is struggling with the same
Toto Wolff on this issue said, “It is hard to understand why the gap is so huge. On the other hand, we have seen Max destroy all his previous teammate. Maybe it is because he has the car built around his preferences. It’s then pointy to drive, but he can cope with it.”
Recently, all the analysis have been showing a wide average difference between the qualifying time of Max and Checo. It has raised a lot of questions on Sergio Perez’s abilities. And while, Perez is trying his best to even qualify in the top 5, Verstappen has been qualifying for the pole effortlessly.

Checo’s future at Red Bull
Due to the major difference between the qualifying average between the two teammates over at Red Bull, it was widely speculated that Perez might lose his seat.
Red Bull has a history of replacing drivers the instant they show slight hint of incompetency. Sergio Perez found himself under a lot if pressure to prove himself in order to keep his seat.
Red Bull advisor, Helmut Marko recently confirmed that Perez will be keeping his seat till the 2024 season. He has a lot of respect for Perez and acknowledges the fact that Perez is a team player.
Hence, Perez can feel a bit relieved considering he is not losing his job till the end of 2024. But that doesn’t mean he can relax completely. He stands 125 points behind his teammate in the driver’s championship and needs to proof himself. Even though Toto Wolff believes its because the car is designed according to Verstappen, but Perez needs to up his game and proof wrong those who believe in his incompetency.
