UPDATE: Carlos Sainz set to take a minimum 10 place grid penalty at the French GP after taking on new engine components
Carlos Sainz
Carlos Sainz will be hit with a 10 place grid drop as he looks set to take taking new powertrain components. This comes after yet another DNF at the Austrian GP when he looked set to finish P2. It was yet another race where Ferrari could have come out with maximum points but their reliability concerns have again come to the fore to let them down and cost them a handful of points.
Ferrari surprisingly held the edge over Max Verstappen after the Red Bull’s tyres faced a substantial amount of degradation in the cooler temperatures as compared to the sprint. This meant that Max was forced into an early pitstop handing over the initiative to Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who were clocking some serious lap times.
Charles Leclerc overtook Max Verstappen thrice during the course of the race and it looked like it was Carlos Sainz’s turn to get past the Dutchman. But, unfortunately, as Sainz was gearing to get past the reigning world champion, he suffered an engine blowout, forcing him to retire out of the race. This had also damaged some of his components.
Carlos Sainz set to serve a 10 place grid penalty at the French GP
Carlos Sainz on Thursday had admitted that it’s a possibility that he might have to take a penalty at the French GP. “It’s still under evaluation, we are still looking at all the available options.”
“We also need to see a bit how the overtaking is here, how everything comes into play you know with the heat, the tyres and we will take a decision but obviously there is a chance it will happen.”
Now, it’s being confirmed that he will take a 10 place grid penalty at the French GP. “Carlos Sainz has a 10-place grid penalty for Sunday’s race after taking new powertrain components,” reported motorsport.
This will be a dent for Ferrari in the constructor’s championship as both Red Bulls will be gearing to take full advantage of that. Let’s see how the Spaniard recovers to gain some ground at the French GP.
