Over the past two seasons, Max Verstappen has established himself as the benchmark in Formula 1. Following his impressive record of winning 15 out of 22 races in 2022, he has continued his dominance by winning six out of the first eight races of the current season. This level of dominance extends beyond Verstappen individually, as Red Bull Racing is currently the sole team to have secured a race victory.
Former team owner Eddie Jordan believes Verstappen will go on to become the best driver in F1 history. He praised the Dutchman’s supremacy on track and asserted he was so proficient that he could well go on to trump the records of the other all-time greats in the sport. However, he raised a point of criticism, namely that his dominance dulls the sport.
The Irishman said in his Formula For Success podcast, “Let’s not forget, in time, Max Verstappen will become the greatest driver of all time, he is that good.” Verstappen is running away with this year’s title after quickly quashing Sergio Perez’s brief title challenge. The advantage of 69 points he holds over his rival has never been overcome in history, and with his fiery form, it seems unlikely that 2023 will be the year that stat changes.
Max Verstappen is already among some of the greatest-ever drivers in F1
The Canadian GP not just saw Red Bull take their 100th win as a team, witnessing Max Verstappen make history, equaling all-time great Ayrton Senna’s 41 career race wins. Verstappen has been in a class of his own so far this season, having won six of the opening eight races, continuing the fine form that saw the Dutchman take the record for most wins in a single campaign during his second title triumph last season.
Verstappen has also matched the legend’s total at a significantly younger age, a difference of nine years compared to the legendary Brazilian, a remarkable feat. The 25-year-old is far from content; for a driver of his ability and stature, victory is a standard expectation. This achievement puts him on the list of top five drivers with the most victories in F1.
The Dutchman also shows no sign of stopping, as he sets his standards higher and higher every race weekend. Notably, he has led every lap ever since he overtook Sergio Perez at the Miami GP three whole races ago.
He also boasts more points this season than his rival constructors, Mercedes and Aston Martin, outlining what an unstoppable force he has been on track in 2023. With this level of superiority, the prospect of a third consecutive title is edging toward becoming an inevitability.
