The Italian GP has been full of on-track action. The race has witnessed several moves at the end of its long straights. However, it seems that one such move went a bit too far. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton made contact with Oscar Piastri‘s McLaren as the two went head-to-head at Monza. The stewards further investigated this incident.
Lewis Hamilton caught up to Piastri’s McLaren for P8 in the race. Oscar Piastri was stuck in a train behind Alex Albon and Lando Norris. Hamilton was driving on fresher medium tires compared to the hards on the MCL60. The two drivers went wheel-to-wheel through turn 2 and along the long straight. However, as the two drivers headed into the chicane, they made contact and forced each other to the escape road.
Oscar Piastri‘s McLaren had damage and the Australian driver was forced to pit and change his front wing. Hamilton, on the other hand, continued racing and chased the cars ahead. This incident caused more damage for Piastri as he lost out on some crucial points for the Woling-based team. Certainly, it was a collision that could’ve been easily prevented.

Lewis Hamilton penalized for incident with Oscar Piastri
Race control investigated this collision straightaway. Lewis Hamilton was deemed to be the culprit for this incident. Subsequently, the stewards gave a five-second time penalty to the 7-time world champion. Hamilton further pushed his Mercedes W14 to the limit to make up as much time as possible to negate the effect of this penalty.
The British driver quickly overtook Piastri’s teammate Lando Norris before even making a move on Alex Albon. Hamilton then got clean air in front of him, with his teammate George Russell being far ahead in fifth place. As such, the 7-time world champion created a significant gap and did not lose any position due to the imposed time penalty.
Thus, Lewis Hamilton and Oscar Piastri collided in the ending stages of the Italian GP. The two drivers went wheel-to-wheel to secure a decent points finish for their respective teams. However, Hamilton ended up causing an incident that hampered the race for both of them. Piastri would not be pleased to see that the 7-time champion did not lose any position despite receiving a penalty.
