Tennis pro Maria Sharapova turned up at the Abu Dhabi GP to support dear friend Lewis Hamilton.
The grand finale of the 2023 F1 season is here and so are all the celebrities who have filed in for one last look at the king class of motorsports for this year. Lewis Hamilton returned to the gates Yas Marina Street Circuit with his Mercedes squad to relive the Abu Dhabi GP where he had lost his eighth title bout to Max Verstappen. Since then, Mercedes have not been able to give Lewis the Championship-worthy car that should win him his record-setting 8th World Championship.
Even though the last few years have been quite unsuccessful for Lewis Hamilton with zero Grand Prix victories since 2021, his fame as a world-class athlete has not tarnished even one bit. As one of the world’s highest paid sportspersons, Lewis has friends in all the high places, including Hollywood celebrities, star athletes, fashion designers and business moguls. And visiting him at the Abu Dhabi race was one of his closets acquaintances Maria Sharapova.
As a former tennis star who ranked at No. 1 in the WTA rankings, Maria Sharapova is known all around the world for her prowess in the court. But off of it, she is a fashion icon who donned a sueve suit to come to Yas Marina for the last Grand Prix of 2023. And when SkySports interviewer Martin Brundle asked Sharapova whom she would be pinning her hopes on for winning the race, her response was quite clear.
I know Lewis for many years. I’ll always support him.Maria Sharapova said about her friend Lewis Hamilton, via Twitter handle @JunaidSamodien_.
Lewis Hamilton barely made it into top 10 at Abu Dhabi
Drawing an end to yet another difficult year, Lewis Hamilton managed to get a P9 spot at the Abu Dhabi GP. The Briton was already facing some difficulties with the W14 right from the start to the weekend in the middle-eastern country. Even though his teammate George Russell got a leading position at FP1, Lewis’ proxy Frederik Vesti could only go up till P15 in his car. And in FP2, Lewis could get an unimpressive eighth-place finish.
Because of the poor performances in the Abu Dhabi FP sessions, Lewis spoke about what the race might turn out to be for Mercedes.
It's been up and down – per corner to the moment you hit the brakes and turn to the moment you hit the apex. It's massively out of balance. Very hard to predict what is going to happen.
In other news, Mercedes’ second driver George Russell wowed everyone with his Abu Dhabi outing. The youngster got a podium victory to end his 2023 season on a high. As he pulled up in the third spot behind Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.
