“We are the trash bin,” Toto Wolff believes pit wall acts as a “vomit bag” for drivers after Lewis Hamilton’s ‘expletive-filled rant’

Toto Wolff accepts being trashed by the driver when a mistake is done in the pit wall. Recently in the Dutch GP, Lewis Hamilton showed his anger on the radio when he lost out a race due to a strategic blunder his team made. Hamilton doesn’t really fume generally and never on his team but Dutch GP was different. Overall he ultimately apologised for his words later after the race.

Mercedes hasn’t won a single race this season. They came really close in the Dutch GP for a probable win and more over a 1-2 finish. But Mercedes made their first mistake of the season when everyone almost assumed them to be a bulletproof team. Though Mercedes has been very consistent with their work, strategy is something that a team doesn’t really can predict and one small mistake changes the whole scenario of the race.

However, Toto understands the heat of the moment drivers go through while driving and a mistake always pinch the driver, and here Lewis had a race-winning chance, “I do too in the race and when you are the driver in the car, it just comes out of you and you cannot even stop it. We are the trash bin, the vomit bag and we are taking all of that because we need to. This is how it has always been in the relationship between a frustrated driver and a pit wall,” said Toto Wolff.

Lewis Hamilton was left out on mediums with the lead of the race when the rest of the drivers behind him were driving on new sets of soft tyres. Valtteri Bottas brought out a safety car that forced Max Verstappen to pit for soft tyres. He was behind Lewis fighting for the lead but Mercedes’ strategy left him behind from the winning position.

“It was something that in the morning, we decided to take a risk. It really backfired for him but overall the circumstances, having Max behind him and stuff, that was totally unpleasant but there are more positives to take and this is what we have also chatted about, that the car is fast here,” said Toto.

Mercedes are battling for the second position with Ferrari in a much slower car. They are 30 points behind the Italian team but are getting better race after race. They still have a race to win for this season after dominating the season in the previous eight seasons.
