“We did a great job today”: Christian Horner explains how Red Bull zeroed in on the race victory for Max Verstappen at Hungaroring

With ten races left in this year’s Championship and the summer break looming ahead, every team came into the Hungarian Grand Prix with guns blazing as this was their last chance to scrounge some much-needed points for the Championship table before the F1 circus goes into a hiatus of one month. But in the end, Red Bull had the last laugh as the Milton-Keynnes-based team showed exemplary planning skills as their well-calculated strategies combated against Ferrari’s poorly constructed ones, and Max Verstappen became the Champion even after starting tenth on the grid while Charles Leclerc fell down to the sixth position after starting in P3.
After the race, Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner was obviously very happy with the unexpected turn that the Hungarian GP took. This was in stark contrast to the picture of Ferrari chief Mattia Binotto leaving his spot in the pitbox and going away towards the end of the race, seemingly because the Italian could hardly stand how the Grand Prix had gone all wrong for the Scuderia inspite of good Qualifying performance.
In his post-race interview, Christian Horner spoke highly of the excellence that Max Verstappen had shown on the racetrack today, and he also acknowledged the perfect planning that helped the Dutchman get to the lead of the race. Red Bull and Verstappen’s result in the Hungarian Grand Prix is a sole testament to the fact that it takes an entire team to build an F1 World Champion.

While Ferrari has a perfect car and two great drivers to help the team, their strategies were all over the place at the Hungarian Grand Prix, and Red Bull took advantage of this to put forth their plan to get Max Verstappen a race victory. Even though the weekend had gone in Ferrari’s favor as they had both their racers in the top 3 during Saturday’s Qualifying Session, the Milton-Keynnes-based team had the last laugh as they showed off their brilliant tactical skills.
Speaking of how Red Bull overcame the looming threats from both Ferrari and Mercedes and cruised to victory, Christian Horner said, “I can only focus on our performance and we did a great job today. We switched our strategy on the grid. Both our drivers felt they struggled to generate heat on the soft tyre. We were due to the start the race on the hard tyre to deal with the ambient conditions. The soft tyre went further than we thought. At that point, we committed to a two-stop.”
Christian Horner went on to describe the critical moments in the race when his team closed in on the win for Max Verstappen. He said, “The key moment for us was when we saw Leclerc go onto the hard tyre, we thought we’ve really got a chance now. We have a great strategy team here and in Milton Keynes. The pit stops today were dynamite.”
