“We don’t see Aston Martin as a direct competitor of ours”: Helmut Marko takes a dig at Aston Martin amidst concerns regarding the new AMR22

Aston Martin had high hopes for the 2022 Formula One Season and were one of the very first teams who revealed their car. However the car did not live up to the hype that it had generated. With poor performances becoming constant, Aston Martin developed a B version of the AMR22, which first took to track at the Spanish Grand Prix. And when it was revealed, the AMR22-B took the paddock by storm, because it looked exactly the same as the RB18. Everyone raised the question whether Aston Martin had copied their car from Red Bull and Helmut Marko stepped in and urged the FiA to look into the matter.

However the International Motorsports Federation found nothing wrong in the Aston Martin AMR22-B and they were allowed to race in Spain and Monaco. After this ruling by the FiA, Helmut Marko is now putting the matter to rest and has stated that he won’t pursue it anymore.

However, Helmut Marko did take a dig at Aston Martin when explaining why they won’t pursue the matter anymore. He commented that they aren’t directly competing with Aston Martin so they don’t really care about this issue.

In an interview with Motorsport-total.com, Dr Marko said, “As things stand, we can’t prove anything and we won’t go after it, because we don’t see Aston Martin as a direct competitor of ours. What you can’t prove in black and white, you should leave alone.”

Helmut Marko also pointed out an interesting proposal that might come up if the FiA fails to make clear rules on how much a car can be copied. Dr Marko said that If there is no clarity on how much a car can be imitated then in the future, Alpha Tauri, Red Bull’s sister team can just copy the Red Bull car and there will essentially be four Red Bull cars on the grid.

As for Aston Martin, their new car did not really bring them any good fortune. Sebastian Vettel managed to score only one point with the B version of the AMR22, as he finished 10th at Monaco. It is a matter of concern, whether Aston Martin have become a bottom-of-the-grid team.
