“We had some exploratory talks,” Christian Horner reveals Red Bull considered Sebastian Vettel return in 2021
Sebastian Vettel
Sebastian Vettel announced his decision to retire from F1 at the end of the current season. The German spent 15 eventful years at the top level, and decided that it was indeed time to move on. Over the last couple of years, Vettel’s career has not gone quite about as planned.
He endured a tough last year at Ferrari, before he decided to make his switch to Aston Martin. The four-time F1 champion has failed to establish his authority at his new team, and has struggled for over the last 18 months or so.
Sebastian Vettel’s best and most memorable years came during his Red Bull days, when he claimed four back to back titles from 2010-13. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner revealed that the team did give a thought on bringing the German back on board in the 2021 season.
Christian Horner reveals why Red Bull did not move in for Sebastian Vettel
Despite admitting Red Bull’s interest in Sebastian Vettel for the 2021 season, Christian Horner stated that they resisted their temptation to do so. Sebastian Vettel was coming on the back of a horrific 2020 campaign with Ferrari, where the Italian team hit new lows.
On the other hand, Red Bull were unimpressed with Alex Albon’s performance, and were searching for his successor. Eventually, they settled for Sergio Perez, who is indeed putting on a good show.
“It would be a bit like going back to an old friend. It probably wouldn’t be the same the second time around,” said Horner.
Even if Sebastian Vettel did end up joining Red Bull, he would be treated as the second driver, behind Max Verstappen. Hence, Christian Horner stated that it was only better for the team to avoid this situation.
