“We have the two best drivers,” Toto Wolff praises Lewis Hamilton and George Russell’s teamwork in a difficult season
George Russell and Lewis Hamilton
Mercedes has faced a disappointing start to the 2022 season after struggling to get the W13 up to speed with the front-runners in the grid. After the Emilia Romagna GP, It was clear that the 8-time Consructors Champions had to battle the midfield for mere points rather than contend for titles. Yet George Russell and Lewis Hamilton have tried to extract the maximum from the W13 according to Team principal Toto Wolff.
The P13 in Imola was Hamilton’s lowest finish and the first race where he scored no points despite finishing since the 2021 Azerbaijan GP. While Russell made his way from P11 to finishing P4 in a fantastic drive producing good overtakes in tricky weather conditions. And people suspected this could result in friction between the two drivers for superiority in the team.
Toto Wolff claimed otherwise saying the two have gotten along and have proven “very productive and positive for the team.” The Austrian says the situation in the team is normal and the duo are working alongside rather than competing with each other.

Mercedes endured the humiliation of both cars getting knocked out in Q2. While 2021 title rival 2022 Emilia Romagna GP race winner Max Verstappen lapped Lewis Hamilton on the 41st lap of the race. The Brit was not able to score points but rookie George Russell managed to carve his way from P11 to P4 grabbing 12 important points for the team. Team Principal Toto Wolff praised the duo for being patient with the car and their teamwork on track to make the best out of the weekend.
Wolff said, “Yes, I’m very impressed with how [George has] settled in, how professionally and analytically he helps to assess the situation. The combination is one of the very few highlights I have at the moment on our journey – how well the two of them work together, with no friction; on the contrary, [they’re] very productive and positive for the team.”
He added, “And I couldn’t be happier with the driver line-up; in that respect, I think we have the two best drivers, maybe two of the three best drivers and they deserve a car and a power unit that fights at the front rather than them being lapped. That’s not what any of them deserves.”
Mercedes have 77 points in the Constructors Championship and are currently 47 points behind leaders Ferrari. George stands 4th in the Drivers standings and is 3 positions and 21 points clear of Hamilton who has been struggling with W13.
