“We have to control our expectations,” Toto Wolff asks fans to not have “huge expectations” ahead of Silverstone GP
Mercedes W-13
Toto Wolff the Mercedes team principal ahead of the Silverstone Grand Prix has shared his opinion about the team’s expectations and has indicated that the Brackley-based team is not too optimistic about attaining a positive result during the upcoming race weekend.
Generally, Silverstone has been a good hunting ground for Mercedes where the team has won 8 of the last 10 races but the way the 2022 season has gone for them so far, it seems highly unlikely that the silver arrows would be able to deliver a win for their fans.
Toto Wolff and the team’s technical director Mike Elliott are aware of the areas where Mercedes is lacking this season and thus are a bit skeptical as to whether Lewis Hamilton and George Russell would be able to deliver a strong result like Canada in Silverstone.
Moreover, Ferrari and Red Bull are far ahead of them in the Constructors Championship and there is very little chance that the silver arrows would be able to catch the front runners this season.
Toto Wolff and Mike Elliott on Mercedes prospects in Silverstone
While delving into the upcoming Silverstone adventure Elliott has said, “We have to be honest with ourselves and say that at the moment we are a little bit behind the frontrunners Ferrari and Red Bull. I do think Silverstone is a circuit that suits us better, like Barcelona.”
Wolff has agreed with Elliott but has stressed, “Silverstone has been good for us in the past and it is better than the last three tracks. But It’s not Barcelona. We have to control our expectations and work very hard. We have to come up with solid solutions. Not only for Silverstone but also for the future.”
While on one hand Toto Wolff has agreed with his technical engineer about the track’s characteristics suiting the silver arrows but on the other has also stressed the fact that their car is not at the level of Red Bull and Ferrari and hence has asked his team to not get over-optimistic and keep working hard as much as possible.
Toto knows that the 2022 title is out of silver arrow’s reach and feels that all they can do this season is keep grinding and finding solutions for the problems so that they don’t have to suffer like this season in the future.
