“We know why we are not as fast,” Carlos Sainz reflects on a disastrous qualifying session at the 2022 Mexico GP weekend

Carlos Sainz
Carlos Sainz and Ferrari will definitely not be happy with their results in Qualifying for the 2022 Mexican GP as the duo failed to make it to the top 3 for the first time in many eons. The Italian team’s moment to shine during the weekend has always been their qualifying. Having gathered the majority of pole positions in the races so far in the season, the Scuderia has failed to convert those poles to wins at multiple occasions..
With their amazing qualifying performance so far this season, it was a bit disappointing to see the team finish P5 with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc in P7. Valtteri Bottas was sandwiched in between the Ferrari duo in sixth place. After the Free Practice sessions got over, it seemed like three teams had the pace for pole position. However as we went into qualifying, it was understood that the Italian team was no match for Red Bull and Mercedes.
Ferrari’s woes were spotted during qualifying and Carlos Sainz gave an input on the issue giving the impression that the team knew the reason behind their poor performance in Qualifying. After scoring a pole position in the US grand prix, Carlos was keen to match his performance in Mexico but it just wasn’t meant to be for the Spaniard. Here is what he had to say about the whole situation.

Carlos Sainz talks about his qualifying woes during the Mexico GP weekend

The Spaniard had a lot of questions directed at him during the interviews. However this is what he told Sky F1. “I think we know, as a team, why we are slow this weekend. We know which compromises we need to take. We know the numbers, we know why we are not as fast as we would like. But at the same time, I must say the car was a bit trickier to drive than I expected, or trickier to drive compared to other weekends, and we need to find out why. “The altitude shouldn’t affect us. It should be more the ride and how we were on the kerbs. Today we were suffering out there,” he said.
Carlos Sainz furthermore went on to talk about the issue with the kerbs that they were facing. “We were fighting it a bit too much. I must say the car was really difficult to drive over the kerbs and bumps, which meant it was very difficult to put a lap together. “I think if I put my sectors together, the performance was there to be in the top three with a 1:18.0,” he said.
“But when the car is so tricky around here with the little grip there is, to put that lap together is very difficult. But it’s how it is, we know the compromises we needed to take this weekend and I cannot be too disappointed with the job we’ve done this weekend,” he continued.
The Ferrari driver had a disappointing race in Austin last week where he was spun out on the first lap by Mercedes’s George Russell. He later retired from that race which was a tough result to take in for the team and the Tifosi. Carlos Sainz will be more than determined to put in the work and make up for a bad qualifying with a good result as he will attempt to prevent Max Verstappen from getting yet another win this season.
