“We should not be afraid to speak up,” Sebastian Vettel takes a staunch stand against discrimination and abuse
Sebastian Vettel
Sebastian Vettel, along with Lewis Hamilton, has been one of the most vocal drivers. The German has always spoken his heart out despite finding himself in trouble. Whether it’s campaigning for LGBTQ+ rights or sending a message to lay down the effects of the devastating climate change, Sebastian Vettel has never shied away from taking a stand in public.
Lately, we have see a bunch of racism complaints against and by the driver. Notably, Lewis Hamilton was subjected to racially abusive language as he was called the N-word by Nelson Piquet word during a podcast followed up by a homophobic slanderous comment. The most shocking thing was the three time world champion didn’t feel that he said something racist.
Another incident included Red Bull’s junior Juri Vips, who dropped a racist comment during an online stream, which forced Red Bull to look into the matter. After deliberating over the issue, it was decided that he will be dropped from their junior programme but later on decided to reverse their decision and gave him a second chance, which has not gone down well with the fans.
Sebastian Vettel believes more drivers on the grid should speak out against social evils like racism
Sebastian Vettel has spoken out on this issue and has said that time for words has gone. Answering to reporters’ questions regarding this issue, said, “Well, it’s probably right, you know, on very, very important matters and subjects that you can always do more. That I would agree. So you can never do enough.”
“So it is probably fine to do something and to activate and to mobilise people and to educate, but I think what really matters is that everybody, us on the grid, everybody in this room, every day in every situation that we are in, we act, the way we believe, and we think is correct.”
“That means that if we see any sort of abuse, like Lewis had to go through recently, we respond to it. But also, if you step into a train and you see something happening in front of you, it’s not time to just think that’s wrong, it’s time to speak up and make it clear that it’s wrong.”
We need more drivers on the grid, just like Sebastian Vettel, to use the platform to speak out and make a meaningful change in the process. We can’t allow such horrible things to happen on a regular basis.
