“We will allow them to race,” Toto Wolff makes his intentions clear about possible team orders for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell
Toto Wolff
Toto Wolff and Mercedes have had an unimaginable start to the season with neither George Russell nor Lewis Hamilton anywhere close to the pace of last year. Lewis Hamilton might have lost last year’s championship to Max Verstappen but we all expected him to shrug it off and bounce back from that to once again fight for the world championship yet again but sadly that hasn’t been the case.
Mercedes hasn’t made his job any easier with the development of this year’s car. Both the drivers have time and again complained of the well documented ‘porpoising’ issues. This has made them huge amounts of time on the long straights and in turn made them look like a midfield team, which even sounds weird. But, despite the troubles, George Russell has been able to extract more out of the car than Lewis Hamilton.
But, Toto Wolff has made it absolutely clear that if ever a situation emerges which sees the two Mercedes drivers tucked behind one another, there will be no team orders unlike Red Bull’s decision with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez at the Spanish GP. The Milton Keynes outfit made a debatable team decision which made Sergio Perez yield his position to Max Verstappen which didn’t go down well with the fans.
Toto Wolff say that there will be no team orders if a situation of that sort occurs between Lewis Hamilton and George Russell
Toto Wolff is absolutely clear about what will Mercedes do in such a situation. He said, ““One hundred per cent we will allow them to race. Until a driver is mathematically out of contention, we’re not making such a call.”
“It makes no difference.”
On being asked about if Mercedes pays the price, Toto Wolff replied, “I think that then the constructors’ championship becomes the priority,” as reported by gpblog.
This should be music to every F1 enthusiast’s ears. This is why fans across the globe watch the sport and would not want the team from that happening in any situation.
