“We will break the budget ceiling”: Zak Brown says McLaren will race in all GPs in 2022

With the announcement of a budget cap in this year’s Formula 1 2022 season, there have been a lot of protests from the larger teams saying that the ceiling that has been asserted by the FIA is not enough and they might even need to miss some races in order to save up and stay within the established budget. The heated debates on whether the cap on expenditure in F1 is a wise move by the authoritative body of F1, which is now headed by Neils Wittich and Eduardo Freitas, have reached an all time high and now, McLaren chief Zak Brown is commenting on it.

For McLaren Racing, the budget cap is not an issue as their CEO Zak Brown mentioned their primary focus is set on going for all the races and striving to get as many Championship points as they can–even if it means that they would have to break the budget ceiling while doing so. While many teams have called for the FIA to increase the budget cap because of the inflation in the post-covid world market, their calls have fallen on deaf ears and the budget cap of F1 has stayed the same.

While the budget cap for the 2022 F1 Championship was initially set at $140m, Andreas Seidl, Team Principal of McLaren, has said that the Woking-based team will have to go over the sum in order to add their updates to the car, and target for the best possible results at the end of the year.

While discussing the topic of budget, Christian Horner’s suggestion came up that some of the teams might have to miss a few races to stay within the budget cap. But Zak Brown denied such conclusions by the Red Bull supremo as he said, “We’re all going to race because there are contracts that oblige us to do so.”

He also continued, “We have sponsors who expect that. I can’t imagine a scenario where a team ends the season prematurely. I don’t believe that for a second, it’s just empty threats. We will break the budget ceiling, we saved as much as we could when developing the car and really tried to stay under the limit, but then inflation hit and costs exploded for transportation, for energy.”
