At the end of the year, Sebastian Vettel will retire from Formula 1. Vettel announced his decision in a rather shocking move – with a post on Instagram. Vettel had not had a pleasant couple of years in Formula 1 and was stuck in the lower rungs of the midfield for 2 seasons, until this season, where Aston Martin have hit a new low.

Sebastian Vettel is one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time and is also a role model to many people, inside the sport and outside it. He is known for his out-spoken activism, his charming personality and his jests – and his amazing driving skills of course. Vettel at his peak was something to behold for everyone.

Carlos Sainz is one of the drivers who consider him a role model. Sainz had been a simulator driver at Red Bull back when Vettel was on his run of four consecutive championships, later promoted to Toro Rosso, partnering Max Verstappen. 6 seasons on from his debut, Sainz was eventually the man who replaced Vettel at Ferrari. In a recent interview with MotorsportWeek, Sainz provided insight into his interactions with Vettel.

As stated before, Carlos Sainz was part of Red Bull’s junior programme during the time when Sebastian Vettel and the Bulls dominated Formula 1. He began by wishing Vettel the best for the future: “First of all, wish him all the best now, in the future that he has ahead that I’m sure he’s going to enjoy a lot with kids and family.”

He added that Vettel was a great role model for him: “For me he was, since the beginning, since even before arriving to Formula 1, a great role model. I was privileged enough to be a simulator driver when he was at his peak in Red Bull, winning the Championships. I remember those years very well. He always had kind words for me, stop and have a chat with me, and give me some advice.”

According to Sainz, everyone in the paddock would only have positive words to say about the German: “He’s a great role model as these guys have said already, and he’s an ambassador for the sport, but not only for sport but I think also for a younger generation that is coming through.” he added: “Everyone in the paddock loves him. You will not hear someone speaking bad about Seb.”

Sainz also hopes that Vettel will remain outspoken on issues plaguing sport and society: “I think this year speaks about his personality. He’s alive as a human being, not only as a driver, and I think we will miss him. But I hope that we can see him back in the paddock and also help the sport to develop in certain areas that I think he’s very vocal about recently. And I hope that he can keep giving us a hand in that in that side.”

Sebastian Vettel will be remembered not only as a great driver and a true champion – but also as an amazing human being, a true ambassador for the sport, and a role model for future generations. And everyone will be hoping that Vettel stays involved in the sport in some capacity.
