“We will split operations completely”: Frederic Vasseur elaborates on the plan ahead as Audi is all-set to join Sauber for the F1 2023 season

It has been only a few days since Audi dropped the bombshell news that they are going to enter the Formula 1 scene holding hands with Sauber, after a lot of speculation. With the F1’s new engine rules set to come into place in the future seasons, manufacturers like Audi, Porsche, etc have been looking to take part in the trade. While Porsche’s deal with Red Bull fell through in the early stages, Audi’s contract with Sauber has been officially announced.

Sauber has not had any mentionable success in the recent Formula One Grands Prix, and Alfa Romeo Team Principal Frederic Vasseur believes things will only improve for the team once Audi comes onboard. Prior to this, BMW had been a chief sponsor to Sauber, from 2006 to 2009.

According to Vasseur, the team is struggling considerably with funding since they do not manufacture their own parts and has to buy most products using their budget. And this is the reason why Alfa Romeo Sauber has not been able to move up from the lower middle-field battle that they have been in, for the last few years.

Dishing out some more details about their arrangements with Audi, Alfa Romeo Sauber Team Principal Frederic Vasseur said he expects small improvements in the results at first–“On the short-term view first: it won’t have a big impact except that for us that we know that we can go to the next step and it will be a huge opportunity in terms of recruitment and to be more attractive also for the sponsors for the future.

And then Vasseur said, “But mid-term, for sure it’s a game-changer, because we will have this kind of partnership, and I think F1 is getting more and more difficult. We will split completely operations.”

With the new partnership in place, Alfa Romeo seems all-set to contest Alpine and McLaren in the upcoming seasons. Now, it only remains to be seen if their plans work out, and their goal of getting to the top of the mid-field battle becomes a reality.
