“We’re working flat out,” Toto Wolff looks to close the gap on Red Bull and Ferrari after a positive weekend for Mercedes Baku
Toto Wolff
Mercedes finished off the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with a happy face after George Russell was consistent with his top 5 finish, scoring another podium, and Lewis Hamilton joined him, too, after a fantastic drive making him finish P4. This result from both the Britons turned out to be a morale boost for the entire team. Another factor that made this result possible was Ferrari; both the drivers DNFd after Ferrari engines turned out to be unreliable, not for only the Scuderia, but all the teams using the Ferrari engine suffered issues, which included the Haas of Kevin Magnussen, the Alfa Romeo of Zhou Guanyu, etc.

Although this race was a boost for the team, this leaves Mercedes hanging in the midst of the teams. The team has Scuderia Ferrari standing in their front, but still, they are 38 points behind the Scuderia, and 96 points ahead of McLaren. So, even though they don’t have any chance of falling further down in the rankings, it’s still hard for them to climb their way up. Toto Wolff stated that they maximized the team’s chances of scoring points, and so they ended up where they did.

“Baku was a tricky weekend for us,” Wolff states Mercedes’ troubles throughout the race.
Though they had a great finish, the simple pain the drivers went through in their cars, especially Lewis Hamilton, is unavoidable. The car had a lot of porpoising issues, leaving Hamiton’s back in agonizing pain. Wolff further stated that the team is trying to close up the gap between them and the teams ahead of them; “We’re working flat out to close that gap. But with an underperforming package, I loved seeing the fight in the team to pull together and get us the best result possible with the tools at hand. That spirit will bring us back competing at the front,” GPBlog quoted the team principal.
Mercedes managed to score a total of 27 points in the Azerbaijan GP after George Russell finished on 3rd and Lewis Hamilton followed him up on 4th. The team still stand 3rd but now with 161 points, chasing Ferrari with 199 points ahead of them.
