“When will the pain end”: Woebegone F1 fans react to Carlos Sainz getting a penalty for changing his ICE for the sixth time in 2022

Ferrari racer Carlos Sainz’s woes truly seem endless in this current F1 season. The Spaniard has already had an astonishing number of disappointing race retirements, thanks to problems with his car, and even due to other racers (read, George Russell) colliding with him. And just when the 28-year-old promised his fans that he would do everything to make sure Ferrari ends this season on a high, Carlos Sainz got slammed with yet another grid penalty because the Ferrari engineers decided to fit his car with a new ICE ahead of the Sao Paolo GP.

The Sao Paolo Grand Prix is going to be a massive affair as fans look forward to a lot of action from the top three teams. But Carlos Sainz already looks like he is going to suffer a disadvantage since his new ICE has thrusted him to five places down the starting grid for the race in Brazil. And this is not Sainz’s first time getting a grid penalty for a new car part–but his sixth.

Now, the outraged fans believe Ferrari’s sudden strategical epiphany was absolutely unnecessary and Sainz did not need a new ICE at all. At this point, no matter how well Carlos Sainz fares at the Sprint race, the best starting grid position that he can hope for, after the 5-place grid penalty, is from the P5 spot.

Considering that the Sao Paolo GP is the penultimate race of this season, and that Ferrari and Mercedes are embroiled in a big fight for the P2 spot in the Championship standings this season, fans believed the Maranello outfit would try their best to capture the most ideal results in the race in Brazil. But then came the news that they have decided to add a new piece to Carlos Sainz’s racecar, this late in the season, and hence the fans got angry with such a move.

In other news, the other Ferrari driver–Charles Leclerc–came in the top three at the First Practice session on Friday ahead of the Sao Paolo GP. Only 0.08 seconds separated the trio of Sergio Perez, Leclerc, and Max Verstappen at the action-packed FP1. Now, it only remains to be seen if Charles can continue delivering this pace in the Sprint and the Main Race of this weekend or not.
