Who is the most overrated rider on the MotoGP 2022 grid?
Marc Marquez
MotoGP is known as the pinnacle of motorcycle racing, and all the riders who reach to this level are incredible at their jobs. Yet, in a sport as highly competitive as MotoGP, there is very little room for error, since many talented racers are always waiting in line for a seat at any of the teams if one of the riders perform poorly. While it has been seen time and time again that the teams have swapped riders due to some poor results in a single season, there are other riders who seem to get more chances to prove themselves that they deserve–and one of them, in our opinion, is Marc Marquez.
While Marquez has a huge fanbase to back him up, and indeed, he has achieved great results till just two years ago, the Spaniard seems to have lost his mojo this time around and is, we would say, the most overrated rider on the grid right now. Yes, the 29-year-old has had terrible health problems which have kept him away from the racetrack for too long, but even when he got back, his results were not too impressive. And then Marc Marquez took another extended leave due to his spine surgery–and Repsol Honda had to call in a replacement for him once again.
While health issues should never hold an athelete back, it is quite evident that his injuries and his opthalmic problem has taken away a lot from Marc Marquez–and maybe he should take some time off now to rest and recuperate.
Even though the six-time World Champion came back with a warcry at the Grand Prix of the Americas earlier this year, he has not managed to score a single fastest lap or pole position, let alone win podium and races. Yet, his team continues to keep him as their lead racer when there are many capable replacements waiting in the line for that seat.
Marc Marquez–has his era ended or will he be able to make a comeback?
When Marc Marquez debuted in MotoGP in 2013, he took everyone by surprise. At only 20 years of age, Marquez was unbelievably talented, hungry for points, and had a raw speed that made him win the races. During the period between 2013 to 2019, Marc Marquez was an unstoppable force of nature–but that is, sadly, all in the past. The Spaniard has had some tough years recently, with zero podium wins in the current season of MotoGP 2022.
And now, people are starting to question his tactics, because while he should be up on the podium at all the races, he is spotted visiting hospitals more frequently for his surgeries and rehabilitation. For fans of the six-time World Champion who just want to see him go for the title another time, it is disheartening to see how Marc is down in the 15th spot in this year’s standings with only 60 points to his name.
But in the end, it is true that Marc is only 29 years of age and has some time to improve upon his ways to get back to the top and chase his seventh World title. Thus, it remains to be seen what becomes of Marc Marquez in the upcoming World Championship, and if he gives a good competition to his rivals at the top of the score table like Fabio Quartararo, Aleix Espargaro, and others.
