But in an interview with Motorsports.com that was recorded last year but only came into light recently, it has been seen that the former F1 racer used some racial slurs while addressing Lewis Hamilton’s Silverstone crash from the previous season of Formula 1.
In the interview, Nelson Piquet Sr. allegedly said, “The little black guy [Lewis Hamilton] put the car in and left because there was no way to pass two cars on that corner. He made a joke. Lucky for him, only the other one [Verstappen] got fucked up.”
While the interview has received massive backlash from the common public now that it has come under scrutiny, Piquet has not commented on his verbal abuse towards Lewis Hamilton till now. In a news report published by CNN, it was mentioned that they have reached out to the Brazilian for his quote, but he is yet to respond. Meanwhile, F1 Twitter has issued a public statement that condemns Piquet’s comments and calls for inclusivity in the sport.
How is Max Verstappen related to Nelson Piquet Sr?
Reigning World Champion Max Verstappen, who had a thrilling rivalry with Lewis Hamilton last season which went on till the very last race where Lewis missed on on winning the Championship by the skin of his teeth, has been linked to Nelson Piquet Sr on many occasions. As it appears, Max Verstappen is currently dating Kelly Piquet, a Brazilian model and columnist. Kelly is the daughter of Nelson Piquet Sr and she is the former partner of ex-Red Bull recruit Daniil Kvyat with whom she has a daughter named Penelope Kvyat.
This is why many of the fans have already found a link between Nelson Piquet Sr, who used racial slurs against Lewis Hamilton, and current Championship leader Max Verstappen, who used to have a rivalry with Lewis in the previous season.
