Just when the Red Bull fans thought that their favourite team is out of the woods, and will now be able to close the gap between them and their rival team Ferrari–things have gone wrong for them once again. The Milton-Keynnes-based team had started their race with some poor performance and low scores due to their reliability issues.
Then, the team was able to fix their problems by introducing some new updates in their RB-18. With the upgraded car, Max Verstappen won pole position in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix Qualifying, then he went on to secure first place in the Imola Sprint Race, and also won the Main Race at Imola on Sunday. Red Bull’s double 1-2 podium finish for Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez gave the team members and their huge fanbase a renewed confidence in themselves.
But the confidence in the team’s RB-18 was, quite unfortunately, short-lived. For the latest Grand Prix in Miami, the teams went out for the second free practice session on the Miami International Autodrome Circuit on Friday. While Max Verstappen could only reach as high as the third place behind Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and George Russell of Mercedes in FP1, his luck got worse in FP2. Verstappen’s car, quite literally, caught fire and went up in flames.

Reigning F1 World Champion Max Verstappen was finally happy to have a proper, reliable car, which helped him win the Imola Grand Prix in Italy. But his luck ran out as the F1 paddock hit Miami, because he feels like his RB-18 is underperforming once again. And out of frustration, the Dutchman poured out his exasperation in the team radio, saying, “Mate, I couldn’t f**king steer, it’s locked.”

During the second Free Practice session, Max Verstappen had to go back into his Red Bull garage due to overheating issues with the rear brakes. His team had also changed his gearbox as a precaution for his earlier contact with the sidewall in FP1.
Reacting to his run on the Miami Circuit on Friday, Verstappen said, “Just not a good day, and of course these days are extremely painful, especially on a track like this where you want to be out there and learn the track and get up to speed.”
He further talked about the issues he faced FP2, “Some hydraulic issues, so as soon as I went out of the pits I couldn’t really steer, like I was locked, and yes also the brakes were on fire. So a lot of problems.”
While commenting on Verstappen’s outburst in the team radio, Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner said, “He had a horrible day.”
