Will Max Verstappen punish Charles Leclerc at the end of the season after Ferrari’s ‘stradegy’ in Monaco?
Charles Leclerc
Monaco GP was there for the taking for Charles Leclerc but it went horribly wrong for the home boy. This was suspected to be the race where he sets the record right and ends the curse of Monaco. This was also supposed to be the race when Charles Leclerc closes the gap to Max Verstappen and makes a comeback after an utterly unlucky Spanish GP after having to retire from the race due to a power unit issue.
The Monegasque driver finished P4 in his home race behind the two Red Bulls and also his team mate, Carlos Sainz. It was a better race as compared to last years but will be fair to say that the curse of Monaco has ended? I highly doubt that. We all saw how much faster Charles Leclerc was around his home circuit as compared to any other driver on the grid, including Max Verstappen. It was Charles Leclerc’s race to lose keeping in mind how much quicker the F1-75 is on the slower corners against the RB-18 of Max Verstappen.
After securing pole, it was supposed to be a cakewalk on a circuit where overtaking is so difficult, provided he got the start sorted out. But, heavy showers watered down all the plans that he and Ferrari had before the start of the race. This meant that there was a sense of unpredictability hovering over the outcome of the race.
Charles Leclerc left furious after Ferrari’s strategy disaster in Monaco leading to handing over the onus to Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen
Red Bull were looking for a way into the Grand Prix and they grabbed this opportunity with both hands. After a disastrous call by Ferrari, Sergio Perez was able to perform the overcut on Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen was able to the do the same with Charles Leclerc, which made the home boy furious.
After the race, Leclerc said, “It was a freaking disaster today. The win was clearly in our hands: we had the performance, we had everything. I just don’t really understand the call that I had and I need explanations for now.”
“I couldn’t do much, I was called just before the last corner, so I couldn’t react or ask for any information, but that was clearly the wrong choice… We need to get better,” as reported by formula1.
Monaco circuit was tailor made for both Ferrari and Charles Leclerc to stamp their authority on the season after a disaster in Spain. This might come back to haunt the duo during the business end of the season keeping in mind the upcoming races will suit Max Verstappen more because of RB-18’s extra pace on straights. Charles Leclerc and Ferrari need to go back to the drawing board and sort their house out before both the championships slip out of their hands.
