“Winning the championship is a pretty amazing feeling,” Max Verstappen rejoices as he becomes the 2022 World Champion
Max Verstappen crowned the 2022 F1 World Driver's Champion
The Japanese Grand Prix delivered drama, excitement, bravery and most importantly, a second world title as Max Verstappen crossed the finish line at Suzuka to win not just the race but also the championship. Having crossed the line with nearly a 25 second gap to P2, the battle behind was crucial in determining that actual championship results. What followed in the next few minutes was somewhat bizarre, yet massively confusing.
After crossing the finish line, Max Verstappen had nothing to worry about. The battle for P2 behind him was fierce and got the fans off their seats. The nervousness could be felt as a championship was to be decided. During the last corner of the last lap, Charles Leclerc went off track and cut the corner. It resulted in him getting an unfair advantage. Having finished in P2, it was obvious that a penalty was coming for the Ferrari driver.
Soon after, as the cars entered parc ferme, it was announced during the top 3 finisher interviews that Charles Leclerc was hit with a 5 second time penalty for gaining an unfair advantage. This pushed the Ferrari driver to P3 and promoted Perez to P2. This was enough for Max Verstappen to win the championship and the crowd went wild. It was truly a spectacle to watch. Here is what the now 2 time world champion had to say about his amazing feat.
“We had a tough start but all turned it around,” Max Verstappen on being crowned the 2022 World Champion
The Dutch driver further went on to talk about his massive accomplishment. It’s been a pretty incredible season, of course we had a lot of good results and it has been enjoyable with the team. We had a tough start but all turned it around quite quickly and kept on pushing and improving. To stand here now winning the championship is a pretty amazing feeling for everyone here especially with the Japanese fans and Honda,” he said.
When asked if he can get better, here is what Max had to say. “I don’t think of these kind of things. Of course you always want to be better but it’s a matter of the things you experience of the course of a season and the thing you apply. Also for Checo, he is fighting for second in the championship with Charles. So, he wanted to get by and pressured him of course and that five second penalty and the title for me in this round. Checo is having a good season and it’s a good team work in general,” Max Verstappen continued.
“It’s all difficult to know. They are all great drivers. And, when they all have a competitive car it is a a tight battle and I know that but it’s not something I am really thinking about,” he concluded.
Sebastian Vettel won his first title at Abu Dhabi in 2010 and further went on to win his second title at Suzuka in 2011. It seems that history has repeated itself and we’re all for it. After an amazing and dominant season, Verstappen has shown that he is a force to reckon with. At such a young age comparing with other world champions, it is inevitable that there will be more in store for the future. FirstSportz would like to express our heartfelt congratulations to Max Verstappen on winning the 2022 World Championship.
