Yuki Tsunoda had an unfortunate accident in the Mexican Grand Prix when he missed the apex while trying to overtake Oscar Piastri and made contact with him. Piastri managed to keep going and finished eighth in the GP, but Tsunoda spun out and finished only 12th, missing out on points.

Tsunoda expected the FIA stewards to hand Piastri a penalty for the accident, but that did not happen. The AlphaTauri driver did not appreciate Piastri escaping a penalty for an accident he deemed the Australian’s fault and accused the stewards of favoritism towards the top teams.

They love the top teams, so that’s it…We showed a good performance on Saturday, so it’s a shame we ended up like that

Yuki Tsunoda said, as reported by crash.net

Tsunoda currently has the most points out of the four drivers who have driven for Alpha Tauri throughout the season. Daniel Ricciardo is right behind after scoring six points by finishing 7th in the Mexican GP, a season-best finish for the team. Alpha Tauri is currently last in the constructors’ standings and will be hoping for more points to displace Alfa Romeo in ninth.

Daniel Ricciardo’s P7 finish made Alpha Tauri $20,000,000 richer

Daniel Ricciardo had an amazing weekend in Mexico City, qualifying on the second row in 4th and driving to a valuable 7th place, the best result the team has had all year. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda spun out from being on course to scoring points, but the Faenza-based team still shot up to 8th place in the constructors’ championship.

The teams are handed prize money at the end of each year from a pool of more than $900 million, and the distribution is based on the constructor’s place in the final standings. Alpha Tauri going up to eighth has thus made them $20,000,000 wealthier if they keep that place in the constructors’ championship. Alpha Tauri’s race engineer, Jonathan Eddolls, praised Ricciardo for helping the team achieve this.

It’s a car that’s given him [Ricciardo] the confidence to be able to push it closer to the limit than maybe he had in McLaren.

Jonathan Eddolls as reported by thesportsrush.com

Ricciardo is currently targeting a Red Bull seat in 2025. But with rumors floating that Sergio Perez will lose his seat if Lewis Hamilton takes 2nd place in the championship, Ricciardo’s P7 may well be his ticket to driving for Red Bull next year.
