The 2022 F1 season saw Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff face a lot of adversity. A team which had won the constructors championship 8 years in a row was on the verge of being nowhere near F1 giants Ferrari and Red Bull. While the two teams were fighting for the top spots, the Brackley based team was busy dealing with some major problems.

With the 2022 season commencing, the new era of F1 had begun with the car’s design being changed drastically. While some teams were able to adapt to it properly, others weren’t. Porpoising was a term that was thrown around plenty often last year. This was one of the major concerns that affected Mercedes and their performance over the whole year.

The team seemed to suffer the most from porpoising. Lewis Hamilton faced a lot of back problems and it soon started to become a safety issue. Due to that Toto Wolff went off on all the team principals to issue rules to stop proposing effects. However, other teams had doubts as Toto’s car was the only one who majorly suffered. Some principal stated that it had been a long time since Wolff had not been a title contender.

Toto Wolff and Mercedes have a huge challenge ahead of them in 2023. With Lewis Hamilton and George Russell partnering up for the second year together, it will be interesting to see if they can help Mercedes rise back up from the ashes. The team has decided to stick with their ‘no sidepod’ design for the 2023 F1 season but has a backup already in place.
