“Their car is getting faster everyday,” Helmut Marko warns Red Bull about Mercedes’ growing threat

Red Bull's Helmut Marko & Mercedes W13

Soon after the start of this season, it was clear that this would be the year of rivalry between Red Bull and Ferrari after Mercedes was left behind in the initial races. Red Bull struggled to be on the top after reliability issues from the cars, but have managed to chase 5 victories out of the 7 races that have taken place yet. This gave Red Bull the lead in both constructor and driver’s championships. However, with Barcelona, Mercedes seem to be working on their car for this season. The main issue that the team faced was porpoising, which made them lose a lot of pace. But in Barcelona, the team gave the Red Bulls and Ferraris tough competition during the race, and George Russell finished P3, right behind the Red Bulls.

When a former F1 driver and Red Bull team advisor, Helmut Marko was asked about the World Championship, he stated that it still is a game for anybody as the season has more than 15 races remaining and Mercedes are already developing their car.

“I just calculated it: fifteen races we still have ahead of us. Even Russell is only 41 points behind Verstappen. Everything is still possible,” GPBlog quoted Marko.

Gap between the two teams could close up

Marko fears that with Mercedes developing after every single race and improving their lap time, they would soon be able to catch-up with the top teams again as they’re already running 3rd with a broad gap, which could soon close up.

“Their car is getting faster every day, their fastest top times are already at our level or even better. So you really can’t write them off. If Mercedes suddenly dominates everything again, then Hamilton will also come back,” Marko said.

Lewis Hamilton has won the World Championship 7 times, highest in Formula 1 tied with Michael Schumacher, and if Mercedes dominate again, it would be easy for him to chase his 8th world title. The 2021 season saw a bitter rivalry between Red Bull and Mercedes; although Verstappen won the championship, many fans believed he did not deserve to win it this way. “Verstappen deserved the championship, but not in this way,” Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ team principal was heard saying in the final episode of Drive to Survive Season 4.

With Russell finding his pace in the Mercedes and Hamilton coping up, they have managed to score 134 points for the team, and stand third in the constructor’s championship, just ahead of McLaren with 59 points.
