Oscar Piastri had a nightmare of a weekend at the Azerbaijan GP. The Australian driver not only crashed out in Qualifying but even ended his race in the same manner. This could be a detrimental blow to the championship leader’s title hopes. Now, Piastri has accepted that he was at fault on both occasions.

On Saturday, Oscar Piastri binned his McLaren into the wall in Q3. The McLaren star hoped to make up places and do some damage recovery in the race. Unfortunately, Piastri’s situation only got worse. The 24-year-old crashed into the barriers in the opening stages of the race.

This has brought Piastri’s lead to only 25 points to Lando Norris in second place. Luckily, the Briton only scored 6 points in the race. On the other hand, Max Verstappen now trails behind Oscar Piastri by just 69 points.

Oscar Piastri accepted that it had been a messy performance in Baku. The McLaren star insisted that at least he was not slow throughout the weekend. Rather, the championship leader took the blame for making some lapses in his judgement that led to this disaster. Though Piastri recognized that he had made things quite difficult for his crew who worked overtime to get his car back in one piece.

It was certainly a messy weekend for sure but I would be more concerned if I was slow and trying to make up for it that way and having these errors because of that. The fact that they are simple lapses of judgement, it’s obviously not a position I wanna be in or out especially the mechanics in because it’s been a rough weekend for them.

Oscar Piastri not worried over narrowing points gap to Lando Norris

There are just eight races remaining in the 2025 F1 season. Oscar Piastri’s lead to Lando Norris and Max Verstappen has decreased after this round. Now, another bad weekend could be enough for Norris to topple Piastri in the standings. Moreover, Verstappen will be waiting in the shadows to capitalize on any further opportunities.

However, Oscar Piastri made it clear that he was not worried about his title lead. Instead, the Australian driver was just focused on his own results. Piastri pointed that anything can happen in the eight races, be it good or bad. Thus, the McLaren star was going to simply try and improve, asserting that the fight was far from over.

I’m not too concerned about that, I think for me I’m solely focused on myself and what I can do to improve. There’s still a long way to go and if you have good or bad weekends, the championship is far from over so that’s what I’m focused on.

Oscar Piastri explained

Certainly, the Azerbaijan GP is a wake up call for Oscar Piastri. The Australian driver no longer has a cushion of points in the championship. Additionally, the mistakes made throughout the weekend were not acceptable for someone of Piastri’s caliber. It is important that the 24-year-old avoids such troubles in the coming races if he plans on winning his maiden title.
