Oscar Piastri has suffered from a disappointing outing in recent races as his championship lead has been cut dramatically. Max Verstappen seems to be the biggest threat to Piastri in terms of his championship ambitions following the former’s sudden resurgence. Now, despite seemingly losing to Verstappen, the Aussie is confident of his winning chances as he recalls his previous championship battles in junior categories.

Ahead of his F1 debut, Oscar Piastri was a highly competent driver in the junior categories, especially the F2. The Aussie won his maiden F2 title in his rookie season and proved his racing prowess to the grid. As such, Piastri recalled that he had a similar time in his championship ambitions in Formula 2, but he managed to hold onto his title lead back then and emerge victorious in the end.

Currently, Oscar Piastri is leading by just 40 points over Max Verstappen. At its peak, the point difference was over 100 points, which was cut short in a matter of a few races. Regardless, Piastri’s motivation isn’t wavering, as he recalled that he has already been in title fights that were as close, if not closer, to his current situation in the F1 title fight.

Following his previous success, Oscar Piastri insisted that he had evidence for himself that he could bounce back from any difficulties. Hence, he fully and truly believed that he could win the championship in the 2025 season. Piastri accepted that the recent few weekends were tough and the battle had come close. However, he reckoned that performances helped a driver win championships and not just points.

I’ve been in [title] fights that were as close, or even closer at this point than what they are now, so I’ve got the evidence for myself that things can still turn out well, and I still fully believe that I can win the championship. This weekend was tough, and the gap has come down a little bit in the last few weekends, but performance is what is going to win you a championship, not just the points.

Oscar Piastri said, as reported by RacingNews365.

Oscar Piastri reveals the ‘only thing’ left in his championship ambition

The recent few weekends have been challenging for Oscar Piastri, and he hasn’t won a race since his last victory at the Dutch GP. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen is having some extremely high moments and is not making life any easier for Piastri. Still, the Aussie has faith in McLaren’s capabilities to bounce back and ponders over the only thing left to do for him and the team to seal his title win.

Oscar Piastri asserted that he just wanted to understand whether McLaren was maximizing results every race or not. He drew attention to the fact that the race trim was still decent for the team, but Qualifying was where they suffered to excel and achieve some positive results.

Piastri highlighted that for some unknown reason, he couldn’t perform better in Texas. As such, now, the only thing left to do for the squad and the Aussie was to analyze the situation and try to make the best out of it.

I’m just trying to understand if we’ve been maximising the car every weekend, and in race trim, we’ve still looked pretty good, But in qualifying trim, it has been a little bit tougher for us over the last few weekends, and this weekend, for whatever reason, I’ve just not gelled with the car at all, so that’s the biggest thing. The only thing to do is analyse and see what we can do.

Oscar Piastri noted.

The 2025 season of Formula 1 has turned out to be extremely exciting and enticing, especially at the forefront. Max Verstappen’s shocking resurgence has definitely made things more interesting for the fans and drivers alike. Now, all the final five races will surely be thrilling to witness as Piastri aims to fend off against the in-form Verstappen.
