Oscar Piastri won his second-ever Sprint race in Qatar. His previous Sprint win also came at the same Lusail International Circuit last year. However, this win was a bit of a surprise as Lando Norris controlled the race till the final lap, when he let the Aussie through, which made Piastri’s mother Nicole Piastri reach cloud nine.

Lando Norris held off his lead into turn one and was not under pressure from other drivers as he broke the DRS range to Oscar Piastri on the opening lap alone. On the other hand, the 23-year-old soon came under pressure from the Mercedes of George Russell behind. This led the team to orchestrate a dance where Piastri remained in the DRS range of Norris to help him defend from the hounding Mercedes W15.

This dance went on till the final corner on the last lap, where Norris gave the lead back to his teammate for the sacrifices that he made throughout the season. Subsequently, Piastri’s Nicole Piastri mother took to X and revealed how his son’s victory has made her wide awake and she is going to celebrate it.

On the other hand, McLaren further gained six points over Ferrari during the Sprint race alone. Thus, if the Woking-based outfit could extend their lead by another 14 points in the championship during the Grand Prix tomorrow, they would seal off the title with one round to spare.

‘The favor was returned’ – Oscar Piastri

Piastri had given up a seemingly in-pocket win at the Brazilian GP Sprint race to Norris in order to aid him in his championship charge against Max Verstappen. However, with the Briton’s dreams getting crumbled the last weekend in Las Vegas, he went on to return the favor during the Sprint race in Qatar.

Subsequently, the Aussie admitted that the favor was returned, which might help the driver pair get in the groove with each other after having some iffy moments throughout the 2024 campaign.

It was a good show of team work. You could say the favor was returned. It was a little tricky to keep George behind, but a great day for the team.

This proves that both Norris and Piastri would be ready to make sacrifices for each other the next year if McLaren has a title challenger again. Making the papaya duo a strong pair to be reckoned with, as a mix-up of the grid would take place for the subsequent season.
