McLaren are the favorites for the 2025 F1 world title. The Woking-based team looks set to defend the teams’ championship this year, with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris fighting for the drivers’ title. However, it is the former who seems to be in control on-track. Now, F1 pundit Peter Windsor has reckoned that Max Verstappen would’ve performed a lot better than Norris if he was driving a McLaren.

Since the start of the 2025 season, Oscar Piastri has emerged as the favorite for the drivers’ championship. The Australian driver has bagged five victories compared to just two each for Verstappen and Norris. Piastri seems to be much calmer in high-pressure situations than his rivals. While Lando Norris committed a massive mistake in Canada, when he collided into the 24-year-old in the ending stages of the race.

Peter Windsor asserted that things might have been far different if Max Verstappen was in Lando Norris’ place. The F1 journalist declared that if Verstappen raced the McLaren car, he would have simply ‘devoured’ Piastri alive. He insisted that this would’ve been the case if the Australian was at Red Bull as well. Moreover, Windsor made it clear that the Dutchman was far better as a driver than Norris.

If Max were in the other McLaren right now, then he would devour Oscar alive, as far as I’m concerned. And vice versa just as much. Max would do better in all respects than Lando.

Peter Windsor said on his YouTube channel

Windsor asserted that Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are two very talented drivers. However, the F1 pundit insisted that they were simply not on Verstappen’s level of performance. With the Dutchman’s second-place in Canada being the perfect example.

The two of them just have a different skill set. But neither of them is on the level of Max in that car. That’s why Max is still doing what he does in a Red Bull — which wasn’t even as good as the Mercedes in Canada.

Oscar Piastri to ‘blow’ Lando Norris away in 2025

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are teammates at McLaren since 2023. It was believed that the former would have the upper hand on his less-experienced teammate through their time together. This was the case last year when Piastri struggled to match Norris. However, things have taken a drastic turn since.

Peter Windsor recalled the 2024 Hungarian GP, when Norris was asked by McLaren not to overtake race-leader Piastri. The British driver was promised support for his title bid if he didn’t try to fight his teammate for the victory. Unfortunately, Norris ended up losing the title to Max Verstappen last year. Now, Peter Windsor asserted that it was Piastri who was going to simply annihilate Norris in the title race.

You had all those patronizing radio messages in Hungary. Like: Lando, do what’s right for the team, if you want us to support you in the championship. Well, he didn’t win that championship at all. And now we’re here, and Oscar Piastri is about to blow him away in the 2025 World Championship.

Peter Windsor added

Certainly, Lando Norris would not have expected to be on the backfoot against Piastri this season. The 25-year-old is no longer in a position to lead McLaren. This is undoubtedly taking a toll on the British driver who must rediscover his mojo and bounce back to keep his title ambitions alive.
