McLaren has emerged as a title contender in 2024. The Woking-based squad arguably has the fastest car on the grid this year. Lando Norris is in the hunt for the championship against Max Verstappen. Now, former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher has sidelined Norris and Oscar Piastri to reveal the person behind the team’s rise.

Schumacher highlighted that former Red Bull Engineering Chief Rob Marshall is an expert in flexi-wings. Marshall left Red Bull to join McLaren earlier this year. The German emphasized that the British engineer cannot be underestimated as he worked with Adrian Newey for almost two decades.

You can’t underestimate him [Rob Marshall], he has over 20 years of experience of working with Adrian Newey, you learn a lot there, therefore those positions are very important in a team.

McLaren’s ‘flexi-wings’ became a major controversy in F1 as rival teams complained about the legality to the FIA. The Woking-based squad was instructed to make some changes. Ralf Schumacher was unclear if the flexi-wings themselves were a major force in bringing Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to the front of the pack this season.

You will have to drive with a little less wing when you want to drive fast on the straight, the whole point of it is that the car turns in the wind and does not just stand in the wind. I don’t know if this is an important measure for performance.

Ralf Schumacher warns Max Verstappen to ‘not underestimate’ Lando Norris

Max Verstappen is currently leading Norris by 52 points in the championship. Lando Norris has six races left to defeat the Dutch driver for his maiden world title. Ralf Schumacher insisted that McLaren will likely have the strongest car for the remainder of the season. As such, Red Bull cannot underestimate the British driver.

think Mclaren will stay the strongest car. And you can’t underestimate Lando Norris in the current races, it will also give a push, it will get interesting between both of them.

Ralf Schumacher asserted

Certainly, Lando Norris will be pushing himself to the limit in the upcoming races. The McLaren driver needs to close in on Verstappen every race to ensure that he can win the world championship. However, it remains to be seen how things pan out in this exciting title fight.
