Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso are two of the greatest drivers in recent F1 history. The two share a strong bond off-the-track. However, Red Bull Chief Engineer Paul Monaghan reckoned that both drivers wouldn’t be so kind to each other on-track.

Monaghan claimed that Red Bull will have to prepare a lot of chassis if Max Verstappen was in a fight against Fernando Alonso. The Briton insisted that the two drivers would be ‘ruthless’ to each other, while maintaining fairness. Moreover, he speculated that both Verstappen and Alonso would be quite vocal on their respective team radios.

We will have to build a lot of cars because they will not give each other half a millimetre of space. They would be fast, fair and ruthless. I can imagine it would be quite busy on the radio.

Paul Monaghan told DAZN

The reigning world champion has never directly been in a championship fight against Alonso. Though, the Spanish driver hopes to finally make inroads in the title fight in 2026, courtesy of Adrian Newey’s switch to Aston Martin.

Respect a ‘no brainer’ between Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso

Paul Monaghan made it clear that Verstappen and Alonso would undoubtedly remain respectively to one another even when engrossed in a fierce fight. The Red Bull engineer further pointed out that if Alonso in his 40s, can match the Dutch driver, then it would simply be remarkable to watch.

There would be enough respect between the two though, that’s a no-brainer. Honestly, if Fernando can fight Max at this stage of his career, hats off to him. It would be great to see.

Paul Monaghan added

It is unlikely that Fernando Alonso could pose a threat to Max Verstappen in the upcoming season. Aston Martin is simply too far off the pace to catch Red Bull. However, the two-time world champion can make life difficult for the Dutchman if he can find himself in the battle for podiums.
